Poem Bass V was written in 2011 and is part of an ongoing series of works for unaccompanied double bass - each written for a specific player - and is dedicated to Rob Nairn.
The episodic structure produces a number of contrasting moods and styles throughout the solo range of the double bass, always with a free and rhapsodic movement and momentum, allowing the advanced player to demonstrate musical and technical skills in equal measure. Anyone who knows the music of Teppo Hauta-aho will enjoy this piece, with its equal mix of effective musical and technical challenges, and it would fit easily into any recital programme and for any audience.
