Eye-Tunes is an on-going series of freshly minted original works for solo piano by that extraordinary neo-renaissance figure, Mark Tanner. It deserves the highest praise. The project in total presents 100 accessible, useful and witty pieces of moderate to short length that range in style from pop to jazz, abstract to impressionistic, neo-classical to Chopinesque. The titles chosen are often witty, including 'Whole Tone Snail', 'Porta-loo Blues' and 'Lunch Pack of Notre Dame', whilst the playing from Mark Tanner himself on the accompanying CDs is of the highest quality. There are some highly perceptive and humorous performance hints in the foreword, and these include hints over phrasing, 'swing' rhythms, voicing of chords and improvisation. I applaud Tanner's plea for the would-be interpreter of his music to 'roll up your sleeves and have fun...and if you are an adult pianist returning to playing...remember that a grade three piece played with rhythmic vitality, shape and sensitivity will be so much more impressive at your next dinner party than a grade five piece fumbled-over!' Most importantly of all, Tanner's music has direct appeal, is memorable, sits well on the keyboard and under the fingers, and is colourfully conceived. Bravo in every respect.
