A rare departure for us at Fourbass Music, a serious bass quartet! I know I know it sounds odd but we really enjoy championing the music of Arthur Sullivan.
lasting about 13 minutes and originally for string quartet the Andante & Allegro date from 1859 and were written whilst Sullivan was studying in Leipzig. They were the only works in this genre written by Sullivan, thought lost until discovered in a box of secondhand music in an Oxford bookshop in the mid 1990s. This is the first arrangement for Double bass Quartet , it goes rather well with a few small changes to the top two parts.
Romantic in style and reminds one of the first movement of the Mendelsson octet.
The Romance is a seperate piece written for his mother, short and charming only lasts a few minutes.
