The first production of John Gay's 'Beggar's Opera' created a completely new genre, the ballad opera. Gay rejected the artificiality of the Italian opera and used popular tunes and ballads of the day to which he added his own lyrics. Four of the most charming airs have been chosen for this arrangement.
