Darkness To Light is the story of someone finding happiness after years of torment. Musically, I have used a waterphone at the beginning to conjure up loneliness, which breaks into a heavy drum pattern-based section on the piano and drum kit, which eventually gives way to the "Light" section.

In terms of textures and atmosphere this final section owes much to Chick Corea and Gary Burton and their haunting album Crystal Silence. Darkness To Light was premiered by Evelyn Glennie and Philip Smith in the Barbican Hall, London in 1997 and is dedicated to my mother.
