Trio Poem Basso II is in two movements and is dedicated to David Heyes, Esra Gul, Joe Prindl and Alexander Heather. Subtitled 'Two for Three' the music is accessible and evocative, rhythmic and atmospheric employing elements of classical, contemporary, jazz and world music to create mini-tone poems of colour and texture. Teppo Hauta-aho is a past master at exploiting the many facets of the double bass, using playing techniques and effects to add great variety and interest, with effective music for each player.
The composer is obviously influenced by many styles and idioms, all of which he mixes and crystalises into a style which is both open and expansive, idiomatic for the double bass and exploiting a rare palette of colours. There is much to enjoy in this piece, for performers and audiences alike, ephasising the solo and ensemble possibilities of the double bass.
Trio Poem Basso II was premiered at Wells & Mendip Museum (Wells, Somerset) by Joe Prindl, David Heyes and Alexander Heather on Sunday 23 March 2015.
It was recorded in Oslo at the Norwegian Academy of Music on Saturday 1 July 2017 by Dan Styffe, David Heyes and Kenneth Ryland for Prima Facie Records.
