Poem Bass IV is subtitled 'an Absent Minded Dance' and is part of an ongoing series of works for unaccompanied double bass - each written for a specific player - and is dedicated to the young English bassist, Sarah Buckley.
Formerly a student of David Heyes at Southampton University and the RNCM (Manchester), Sarah Buckley has worked with Teppo Hauta-aho at Bass-Fest for a number of years, also in the Czech Republic, and gave the UK premiere of the composer's evocative Aurora's Serenade in 2007.
Poem Basso IV, composed in 2008, has a 'waltz-like' feel, employing many solo effects and techniques which are typcal of the composer's works for unaccompanied double bass.
The episodic structure produces a number of contrasting moods and styles throughout the solo range of the double bass, always with a free and rhapsodic movement and momentum, allowing the advanced player to demonstrate musical and technical skills in equal measure.
