Born in 1906, Arnold Cooke is a respected English composer. He composed this conservative sonata in 1987 for London Wind Trio bassoonist Roger Birnstingl.

Birnstingl's words best describe the sonata: 'I wholeheartedly recommend this sonata - a bit Hindemith in harmonic feeling, not too technical, with a really beautiful, lyrical slow movement and powerful, no-nonsense finale.
