Roy McCormack

Composer Information: Roy McCormack

Roy started singing at the age of 11 in a good local church choir and began playing the flute at the age of 13. After finishing his A levels he went on to study a degree, in Music, with the University of Wales at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. After completing the course and being employed in several other jobs, he studied his PGCE at the Didsbury School of Education in Manchester. He worked for six years as a second in department music teacher in secondary education and then spent eight years as the Head of Music. Roy has been the Head of ICT for the last four years but still teaches music within his school and has taught the flute privately for the past 15 years.

Roy has conducted many different ensembles in the past but currently conducts the Richmondshire Choral Society and the Intermediate Wind Band at the Northallerton Music Centre. He has sung with various choirs including his college chamber choir, the National Youth Choir of Wales, the North Yorkshire Chorus, Richmondshire Choral Society and the Wensleydale Chorus. As well as still singing with the Wensleydale Chorus he also plays flute in the Richmondshire Orchestra.

Roy has composed and arranged music for his choral society, Richmondshire Orchestra, the Intermediate Wind Band and the Intermediate String orchestra. Although he has had a very traditional music training he has also played electric guitar since he was 16 and has played in several rock and blues bands over the years. As well as playing in bands, Roy frequently works with students in school to help them set up rock bands and learn techniques like improvisation, ensemble balance and song writing.
