Although more influential as a cellist than as a composer, Bernhard Romberg's (1767-1841) music is full of charm and elegance and successfully combined the style of the late 18th-century with the stirrings of early romanticism. Originally for solo cello, accompanied by viola and cello, this transcription for cello and piano by F. Gustav Jansen and newly transcribed for double bass by David Heyes, transposes it a minor 3rd higher than the original, putting into a more soloistic register for the double bass.
The three movement sonata is ideal for the good intermediate bassist who is looking for something a little more substantial for study or performance. There are musical and technical challenges for the intermediate performer and the opportunity to perform a sonata from the early 19th-century which transcribes well for the instrument.
