Dating from 1846, this lively and energetic polka by Johnann Strauss II (1825-99) - the most successful and prolific of the Strauss dynasty and nicknamed 'the Waltz-King' - transcribes well for double bass octet and is also playable by larger forces. Basses 1-4 play primarily in treble clef/thumb position and bases 5-8 have more of an accompaniment role but still with melodic interest in the lower registers.
Czech Polka is a lively and fun work and would suitable for an advanced youth orchestra bass section, or conservatoire bass department, and would be an ideal encore or final work in a recital. There are challenges for each player and percussion could be added for even greater effect. Enjoy!
