Composed in early 2003, Ocean Deep is a beautiful and evocative trio employing arco melodies, pizzicato accompaniments and ethereal harmonics. Emily Howard is a prize winning young composer and has written a number of impressive pieces for double bass. This one-movement work is aimed at the good intermediate trio offering musical and technical challenges in equal measure. The style is lyrical and tonal, very approachable and is a useful addition to the trio repertoire.
The composer writes: 'Ocean Deep depicts a serene oceanic life where large entities manage to remain graceful alongside the smaller more delicate undertones. It is aimed at younger players and was composed for the lower register of the double bass with the addition of some harmonics. These harmonics are used to create the 'floating' tune heard throughout the piece.'
Ocean Deep was premiered on 16 April 2003 at the Purcell School (UK) as part of Bass-Fest 2003.
