This lively, rhythmic and enjoyable polka-schnell is typical of the music of the famed Strauss dynasty in 19th-century Vienna. It transcribes well for double bass trio, offering effective challenges for each performer, and is tuneful and enjoyable, with a string rhythmic drive and momentum, and would be suitable for any concert or audience.

David Heyes has transcribed several hundred pieces for double bass and his arrangements have been performed and recorded throughout the world.

Joseph Gungl is descended from a Hungarian family of musicians and was born in Zsambek on 1 December 1810. He enlisted in the Austrian army, first as an oboist and then as bandmaster, and gace many European concert tours with his regimental band.

In 1849 Gungl was appointed Music Director to the King of Prussia and in 1858 appointed Kapellmeister to the Emperor of Austria. As a composer he was certainly prolific and by the end of 1873 was said to have composed more than 300 dances and marches. His music is noted for their charming melodies, rhythmic drive and interest.

Joseph Gungl died in Weimar on 31 January 1889.
