Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry (1848-1918) was one of the leading English composers and teachers of his generation. He studied at Oxford and from 1883 taught at the Royal College of Music, succeeding Sir George Grove as Director in 1894. He was a prolific and successful composer and much of his choral music is still regularly performed, particularly Jerusalem, Blest Pair of Sirens, I was glad and many more, although his orchestral music is still awaiting a major revival.
Welcome, Yule! is set to a 15th-century text and was first published in 1917. It was composed for the Royal Choral Society, directed by Sir Frederick Bridge, and first performed with 'great spirit', according to the composer, at the Royal Albert Hall (London) on 17 December 1917.
Welcome, Yule! is a short and vibrant work which is full of energy and Christmas spirit. The melodic material is shared equally and there are effective musical and challenges for each voice. It would be ideal as an encore or to end a concert and there is much to enjoy for both performers and audiences alike.
