The 'Winter Journey' of the title is the Journey of the Magi. The work is based on the plainchant Hostis Herodes. The chant is stated in the Prelude. The five short movements that follow illustrate the five verses of the text. The plainsong melody is woven into the texture of each movement.

The work as a whole is in free-variation form.
