Dvorak originally wrote the first set of Slavonic Dances op. 46 for piano duet. It was composed in the spring of 1878, and in the same year was orchestrated by the composer for large symphony orchestra.
The present arrangement, which is destined for the standard piano quartet, is tuned to the needs of established performing practice offering up to twelve optional instrumental combinations.
The piano is employed here as a harmonic and rhythmic base over which the three melody instruments (violins I and II (or viola), cello, flute, clarinet, bassoon) play. The edition consists of a piano score and 4 separate instrumental parts (violin I/flute, violin II, clarinet in B-flat, cello/bassoon).
The arrangement is by Martin Hybler, a prolific composer and arranger and graduate of the Prague Conservatoire of Music.
