The Waterman/Harewood Piano Series series

The publication of the Waterman/Harewood Series in 1967 launched Faber Music's educational list and firmly established its reputation in the market. Piano Lessons Book 1 was one of the first 'modern' piano tutors, written by Fanny Waterman and Marion Harewood, daughter of the musicologist and Schoenberg pupil, Erwin Stein. Their piano tutor series Me and my piano, published in 1989, is now a best-seller in Faber Music's educational list; combined sales of their publications will soon reach two million copies.

Fanny Waterman DBE has become a legend in her own lifetime. The original edition of her book "On Piano Teaching and Performing", published in 1983, distilled the knowledge and experience of a brilliant piano teacher over a 45-year career: the book's insights into the fundamentals of playing technique and of musicianship, its shrewd practical advice and illuminating turn of phrase have immeasurably benefitted all who teach and all who learn the piano.

Twenty years on, this new edition has been updated to reflect Dame Fanny's more recent experiences, with inspiring thoughts and words of advice not just for pianists but for all musicians.

The book now also includes a new chapter about the world of competitions (local, national and international), for which she has become renowned, and an appendix with some of the thought-provoking and often inspiring "Rules and Maxims for Young Pianists" of Robert Schumann, which are still startingly fresh and relevant for today's musicians.

Reviews

Dame Fanny's wisdom leaps out on every page of this book; she misses nothing; her standards are meticulously high and she expects the best even from the youngest pupil. Every step is described simply but with devastating accuracy, and some of the ways in which she gets over an idea are simplicity itself. As a sure guide to every aspect of teaching and performing, this book is a gem. So is she.

Dame Janet Baker CH DBE

This book is a real pleasure to read. It embodies in concise and direct language the most important points of piano playing and of music making from which teachers and students can make their own points of departure.
