3 pieces for solo clarinet.

The 3 Pieces may be played either by themselves, in sets of two, or all three together. The order should be decided by the performer, to suit their programme. These 3 Pieces were originally conceived for solo saxophone, but also work well on other solo woodwind instruments. This version has been edited and revised by Rob Buckland especially for solo clarinet.

1am: 'A lonely man, on the New York Sub-way, playing his clarinet - not for money, but for himself. No one else is around and it is 1am'. Initially conceived as a work for solo soprano saxophone, it has been re-written to be played on any clarinet. The piece is now a much freer work, and more in resonance with the original conception. Performers should feel free to experiment with electronic effects (such as reverb, etc.) or adding a tape/cd part. 1am is dedicated to Kenji Fenton.

èlègie: was written in the summer of 2004. It was originally conceived as part of a larger work for choir with soprano saxophone playing the elegie as a solo in the middle of the piece.

dawn song: was written in October 2004 as a sister piece to 1AM and èlègie. It takes some of the structural, harmonic, rhythmic and melodic elements from the first two pieces, and blends it into a new and different piece, but still retaining some of the key elements of the music. dawn song is dedicated to Andy Scott.
