Jan Matthews grew up in Hampshire and studied the violin at Trinity College of Music (1981-1985). After leaving Trinity she spent a couple of years living abroad playing with the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra. On her return to the United Kingdom she spent many years as a freelance violinist in the London area and it was during this period that The Oberon String Quartet was formed. In recent years Jan has devoted most of her performing time to leading and jointly managing the quartet, which has become one of the most successful in the South East of England.
Jan has a love of teaching the violin and has been a member of the instrumental teaching staff at The Hall School, Hampstead since 1989. She teaches individual violin lessons, conducts a string orchestra and coaches ensembles.
Arranging music for string quartet and string ensemble has become an increasingly absorbing and enjoyable part of Jan’s work.
