Ken Stobbs

Composer Information: Ken Stobbs

Ken Stobbs was head chorister at St. James’ Church, Southport, before joining the Band of the Royal Corps of Signals, aged 15. After studying the clarinet at the Royal Military School of Music, he toured with the Royal Signals Band for seventeen seasons, initially as a clarinettist and subsequently as a solo xylophonist, where he performed in concerts across the whole of the UK and in many parts of Europe. Solo xylophonist work includes ‘Music While You Work’ and ‘Friday Night is Music Night’ for the BBC; and broadcasts for the American Forces Television Network in Berlin. He was also the featured xylophonist on an official BBC LP record of the band.

After serving 25 years in the army, Ken embarked upon an extensive career, teaching the clarinet and recorder with the Dorset Rural Music School and at institutions such as Bryanston, Hanford and Port Regis. A number of his former pupils have furthered their instrumental studies to a professional level, including the distinguished clarinettist, Fiona Cross.
Drawing on his expertise as a musician and teacher, he has collaborated with Stephen Binnington on Mega Fun Recorder (SP1130) and Mega Fun Clarinet (Phylloscopus Publications (PP328); pieces designed to enhance the musical education of budding, young students.
