Composer Information: J. Rémy

             J. Rémy has had a long and varied career as orchestral player and teacher and one of his earliest and most treasured memories was seeing Pablo Casals in concert.   After winning the ABRSM Gold Medal at Grade 8 he studied with William Pleeth, Christopher Bunting and Maurice Eisenberg and graduated from the Guildhall School of Music with the Libotton Memorial Prize for cello. He free-lanced in London for a number of years, playing with the BBC, LPO, for West End Shows, teaching at the City of London School, Wellington College and the Guildhall School of Music Junior Exhibitioner Scheme and was subsequently Principal cello with the Scottish Theatre Ballet, the BBC and the Ulster Orchestra. In the UO he worked with conductors and soloists such as Sir William Walton, Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Mstislav Rostropovich and Paul Tortelier and toured the USA, Europe and the Far East, teaching extensively in Northern Ireland, at the Royal Belfast Academical Institute, Methodist College, the City of Belfast School of Music and part-time for the regional Education and Library Boards. He has broadcast on BBC Radio and Television in Sonata and chamber-music and free-lanced in Dublin for RTÉ's The Late Late Show, the Music in Great Irish Houses Festival and as Principal cello with the Bolshoi Ballet.

With the onset of a neurological disease called RSD he had to stop playing in 2000.  From this bleak moment emerged a book based on his experiences as an orchestral musician and teacher and of course his passion for the cello.

Cellowise was devised for fun and to bring significant new items into the cello repertoire. It makes a practical and versatile recital book (in 2 parts) for cellists of all ages and for all occasions.

Special thanks are due to Alexander Baillie and Steven Isserlis for their invaluable support, to William Butt and Archie Chen for their dream recording of books 1 and 2, to the many teachers who gave advice and not last but foremost to pupils for their enthusiasm and fantastic performances.

The Cellowise series has had recent mentions on Classic FM's Arts Daily Programme. Volume 1 featured on the 2014 Bauhinia Cup String Competition in Hong Kong and is on the current syllabuses of Trinity College London, the Musik-PrüfungsKommission in Vienna and the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin, 2015-2018.

The author's arrangements of Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev and Richard Strauss have been licensed and copyrighted by Universal Edition, Boosey & Hawkes and Alfred Publishing in America.
