Composer Information: Michael Regan

Michael Regan was born in 1947. His musical training was at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he studied harmony with Peter Wishart and composition with Buxton Orr and later, Patric Standford.

The composer divides his work into three stylistic phases (so far): early works are in a tonal and fairly traditional idiom and are mainly for concert performance. These include concertos for violin, piano and guitar, chamber works and songs. The second phase consists largely of works for student and semi-professional performers. From about 1990-97 the influence of Jazz and Latin-American music may be detected in a fair number of short piano and instrumental pieces. The most recent stylistic features in his output are the result of an interest in minimal, oriental and experimental music. The bulk of works from about 1995 are short piano pieces, in sets or as individual items, totalling to date about 70 separate movements. Other recent works include Tuba Quartet written for the virtuoso group Tubalate, and recorded by them on TCD4, A Trio for bassoons, and American Madrigals for SATB and piano.

Michael Regan divides his time between teaching, examining and composing. He holds a Masters Degree in composition gained 'with distinction' and is an Honorary Fellow of The London College of Music where he has taught and examined for nearly thirty years. He is married and has two children.
