John Whitfield (b. 1957) is a renowned British Conductor (initially the assistant to Sir Charles Mackerras) and a fine Bassoonist.
He was educated at Chetham’s School of Music, and Keble College Oxford. He returned to London in 1979 from two years as principal bassoon of Israel Chamber Orchestra, where he founded the Endymion Ensemble with whom he conducted this ‘Gran Partita’ in its original form, many times.
He conducted the Endymion at all London’s concert halls; Bath, Cheltenham and Harrogate festivals and on Radio 3, BBC TV and ITV. He also conducted two recordings of Britten and Stravinsky for EMI.
